I have often heard other photographers say that the most important filter a photographer can have it the patience filter! If you find something that you like, take a photograph of it as a record shot, then wait and see what your subject brings to you! If you have the patience to wait, you may be able to capture several different photographs without even moving your camera! For instance, below is a picture of a seagull at Nantasket Beach standing on one leg. I loved the way he looked and the reflection, etc... So I set up the shot with my tripod, and just waited and watched.
My subject didn't move much, but the water did, and just waiting that little amount of time, I got a picture with a different feel to it! I still got a little of his reflection, but I like the way it looks. I ended up leaving before the seagull, because my feet almost got wet as well!
Normally I don't shoot photos around noon time, because the sun is harsh and the shadows Are too strong. It was too nice of a day to stay in on this day, so I headed to the beach for a walk. I brought my camera with me just in case! I wanted to get photos of things that washed ashore! This is another sample of what waiting in one spot, for even a minute or two can do. And how different the photographs come out. Here is a shell that washed ashore, I loved the way the water left a design in the sand. So I took a shot, and waited. This time I hand held the camera, didn't have my tripod with me.
While I was looking at the camera to see if the exposure came out okay, a wave came in and rushed past the shell. I missed the wave, but I got the water as it was going back out to sea, and left a quick reflection before the water evaporated back into the sand again! The sea foam gave a great texture to the water!
Now that I knew the water was coming in close to the shell, I waited one more time, and got a picture as the next wave came in, and I caught it right as the water hit! I call this one "Shell shock!"
The picture below is of a Piper. I was standing still on the beach photographing the pink and purple in the sky and the reflections in the water. This little guy came running up towards me! I turned on my flash quickly, and took a shot. I figured at least I would get one shot, and I did!! I tried to get a second shot, but he saw me move, and flew away! But I did capture this one shot before he did! My patience filter here was that I was still enough for him to pay more attention to the food being washed ashore than he was to me! So it pays to be still for a little bit!
Some photographers will set up a shot, and wait for hours for the photograph to come to them. Me, I am not THAT patient! =) Next time you see a location you like, or a subject, just relax, and put on your patience filter and see what photographs come to you! Good things come to those who wait!! =)
Have a great day! Happy shooting!!
