Time to Just Be...

It wasn't until the recent years that I really learned to appreciate the ocean. I am Irish, I burn and I can't swim! So why go to the ocean?? I consider myself a mountain girl. I love everything about the mountains. the landscapes the streams and waterfalls, and especially the animals that live there. Although I will admit when night time comes around, the city girl comes out, and I want a hotel or a home to go to, no camping for me! =) Don't love it THAT much!! =)

Anyway, lately I discovered that the ocean is also a favorite place for me as well! I only go on off times though. Stormy days, winter, and sunrise or sunset are my favorite times to be there. I really prefer it at dawn, right before the sun comes up. Usually there is no one there, maybe a person or two walking their dogs, but after you are there a while, you can just clear your mind of everything accept the beauty that is around you, and you can sit in awe! You can just sit and "BE" for a while. In a fast paced life, that is a must!
The first three pictures were taken at Brant Rock in Marshfield at dawn on a winter morning. I used ISO of 200, and aperture at 32 and also added a neutral density filter, which is a grey filter that works just like sunglasses but doesn't not effect the color. I use this to get the slowest shutter speed possible.

Just set the camera on a tripod, and let the magic begin! Everything that is still like the rocks will remain sharp as a tack, and the motion of the water becomes soft and peaceful looking. It is best to do these types of photos on cloudy days, or before the sun comes up so you can get the long exposure without over exposing the photograph.

While I was photographing this one, you could not only hear the roar of the waves, but the rippling of all the pebbles when the tide was receding! Sounds like someone dropped a bag of marbles!! If you haven't experienced this, I highly recommend it! It will take your breath away! =)

This is Minot Beach in Scituate! With the Minot Light in the background. Also known as the I Love You lighthouse. It flashes one, four and three times. This beach is amazing. I love it at high tide because you can stand on the wall to take photos as you duck the waves, and at low tide you can walk for miles! On windy days you can capture the waves wrapping themselves around the lighthouse! I thought those photos were fake until I got to take some myself!

So if you ever just want to "BE" go to the beach when no one else is there, it is truly inspiring!! Enjoy!!
